Vilafamés

Vilafames panorama

Vilafamés, the red village. One of the most beautiful in the area. It has a long history dating back to prehistoric times. Iberians and Romans settled there as well. It was a crucial place during the time when the Moors ruled. Eventually, the Christians took it back in the Middle Ages. The town's castle, built in the 13th century, is a symbol of its medieval days. In the 20th century, it became an artists', such as painters and sculptors attraction center. Today, Vilafamés is known for its history and cultural heritage.

The first thing we visited in Vilafamés was the Silla Roja (eng. Red Chair). I talked about it in my previous story. I once again accidentally spotted it on the map and we just couldn't resist visiting it.

We visited Vilafamés with our 5 month old. Coming with a baby, I would highly recommend using a baby carrier instead of a stroller since the streets are steep and cobbled. The village is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the province as well as in the whole Spain itself. To my big surprise, we met maybe 20 people. It is a big contrast from what I am used to. I lived 7-8 years in the Netherlands, country 5 or 6 times more densely populated than Spain. There every somewhat more interesting location is crowded with people anytime of the year.

The most important object to visit, on the top of the hill, is a castle, that looks like it's built into a rocky mountain. It's quite a climb through the narrow streets, but definitely worth a visit and has a wonderful view from up there. The oldest parts of it date back to the 14th century, and surprisingly, most of the old structure is still there. You can also find remains from the Roman, Muslim, and Christian times. More about it here.

In the foothills of the castle, one of the spots to visit is a L'església de l'Assumpció (eng. The Church of the Assumption). The church has a single nave and is nicely decorated, including a high altarpiece from the early 17th century. The design is highlighted by columns, rounded golden arches and a curved ceiling, all of which are decorated with Baroque elements.

Another rather exceptional place to visit is a Roca Grossa (eng. Big Rock). It's a rodeno rock formation that weighs over 2000 tons. It stands on a sloping ground and seems as if it can roll down any moment. However, that hasn't happened in many many years. Nobody knows exactly how it got there either. It is surrounded by several legends and is a unique tourist attraction

In the end of our visit we stopped at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (eng. Contemporary Art Museum). It is located inside the splendid 15th century building. There you can find over 700 art works displayed in different small spaces on different levels all around the building. What makes it particularly unique is the fact that artists donate or loan their works and that none of the collection is purchased.

Overall, Vilafamés is a beautiful town to visit. Aside from visiting the main tourist attractions, just get lost in its old town streets. The atmosphere is magical and beautiful views are hiding behind every corner.
