Sant Mateu

Sant Mateu old town

Sant Mateu is a charming town with a rich history that dates back to the middle ages and it became an important spot during the Moorish era. Its medieval streets hold beautiful buildings of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

We visited Sant Mateu during the last preparations of its annual medieval event that is organized in order to remember the significance of the town, especially during the time of a wool trade with Florence. The event takes place the second weekend of July and it's a beautiful tradition when town's streets are filled with decorations, a market and all kinds of entertainment.

My favorite place in Sant Mateu is La Plaza Mayor (eng. Main Square). It's a large porticoed square that can be accessed through seven streets. The square has been known since the 14th century and the beautiful fountain there is mentioned in the texts already in 1373. There you can find a few restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or grab some lunch.

From the square we can see another must visit of Sant Mateu - Iglesia Arcipestral de San Mateo (eng. Archpriest Church of San Mateo). It's a beautiful church that was declared National Heritage in 1931. It has elements from all architectural styles from the 13th to the end of the 18th centuries. Here you will find more information and the specifics of each of them.

Last but not least, approximately 10 minutes east by car through the beautiful surroundings, you can find a magnificent Ermita de la Virgen de los Ángeles (eng. Hermitage of the Virgin of the Angels). It's an interesting architectural complex dating from the 16th to 18th centuries composed of the church, the inn, the viewpoint, the well and other annexed buildings. There you can also find a Mediterranean restaurant located in the cozy cellar surrounded by thick old brick walls.

Sant Mateu is interesting to explore. Either by enjoying its architectural heritage and getting lost in its medieval streets or by following one of the hiking trails in the surrounding area.

Feel free to send me your suggestions for must-visit places in the province of Castellón and beyond.
